Donald Trump this week called the U.S. bombing of Serbia in the 1990s a “big mistake,”according to Newsweek.

“The bombing of Serbs, who were our allies in both world wars, was a big mistake,” Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, said in an interview with Serbian magazine Nedeljnik.

“Serbians are very good people. Unfortunately, the Clinton administration caused them a lot of harm, but also throughout the Balkans, which they made a mess out of.”

The intervention by the U.S. and NATO allies, which took place during the Bill Clintonadministration, was aimed at stopping an ethnic cleansing campaign that Serbia was waging against Muslims and other minority groups in the former Yugoslavia.

Serbia’s leader at the time, Slobodan Milošević, died in 2006 while being prosecuted for war crimes in The Hague.

Trump said in the interview that he would institute “a new policy with the Balkans if [he] won” the election.
