Behind the Poll:
Columbus Day took place earlier this week on October 12th and saw many conservatives celebrating his contribution to America’s story. In particular, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida had this to say:
“Columbus Day commemorates the life and legacy of the Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, who made Europeans conscious of the existence of the New World and whose travels opened the door for the development of European settlements in the Western Hemisphere, which would ultimately lead to the establishment of the United States of America.”
However, some believe that he interfered with and brutally slaughtered the Native Americans who already lived in what we now call America. They also note he never set foot on modern American soil. Do you believe it’s right to call him a hero?
