President Barack Obama should promise the American people that he will not offer a pardon to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton for any crime she might be charged with, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said Thursday night, “whether she’s elected or not.”
Giuliani, a former U.S. attorney and associate attorney general, appeared on Fox News’s “Hannity” Thursday night, where he and host Sean Hannity rehashed the various crimes they believed Clinton to be guilty of. Hannity instructed his show’s team to put on screen what he called “Rudy’s list,” which details the specific crimes Giuliani feels he could win a verdict against Clinton on, including bribery, conspiracy, false statements, obstruction of justice and perjury.
The FBI closed an investigation into Clinton’s use of a personal email server during her tenure as secretary of state in July when FBI director James Comey announced that he would recommend against charges for the Democratic nominee. And while that case remains officially closed, Comey announced last week that the bureau is examining additional evidence related to it uncovered during a separate investigation into former Rep. Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of close Clinton aide Huma Abedin, who is accused of exchanging explicit text messages with an underage girl.
Other reported investigations into Clinton, including one into any conflict of interest between the State Department and the Clinton Foundation, have not been officially confirmed by the FBI.
As they were wrapping up their interview, Hannity asked Giuliani, “Do you think there’s any way with what we know now, short of a pardon, that she gets away without an indictment, considering the justice department trying to protect her, the FBI rank and file have now said ‘gloves off?’”
“No way,” the former New York mayor responded, before quickly correcting himself. “There’s one way. If in his lame duck status Obama gives her a pardon. And he should promise the American people that he will not give her a pardon whether she’s elected or not elected.”
“He should promise the American people ‘I will not’ — look, he’s completely, between him and her, they have completely corrupted the justice department and the state department,” Giuliani continued. “Donald Trump is going to have to put in a reform agenda in both the state department and the justice department the same way that it had to be done after Watergate.”
